Meaningful learning is a process in which the student understands and retains information over the long term, relating it to prior knowledge and establishing a personal connection with the material. This type of learning differs from rote learning, in which the student simply memorizes the information without understanding it in depth.

According to this theory, meaningful learning occurs when new information is coherently integrated with the student's prior knowledge. Meaningful learning is more effective and lasting than rote learning, since the student is able to apply what has been learned in new and different situations.

Additionally, by establishing a personal connection with the material, the student is more motivated and engaged in learning. For learning to be meaningful, it is important that the material is relevant and meaningful to the student. It is also important that the teacher guides the student in the process of relating new information to previous knowledge of it, and that he encourages reflection and application of the information.
